What is the current situation of things?
One recurring news that no Nigerian wants to hear is the collapse of the national grid because this always means endless blackouts for homes and severe power outages that cripple the activities of businesses. In recent weeks the national electricity grid had collapsed three times in less than a month, reminding us of the World Bank report in 2020 which mentioned that Nigeria loses about $29 billion annually because of unreliable electricity, which is a high and depressing figure when compared to our annual GDP. However, since 2013 when the electricity privatization process was completed, the sector has witnessed over eighty (80) total grid collapses, and many Nigerians have since been enduring and struggling to manage the devastating economic and social impact that every single one of these systems failures has had on the production, processing, storage, and distribution line of the societies and businesses.
How soon can these recurring power outages be resolved?
In the notices from both the EKEDC and AEDC to the general public, they stated clearly that they are awaiting resolution and restoration of the national grid collapse from the TCN. However, earlier in the month the TCN had absolved itself of any responsibilities for the recurring power shortages and ascribed the low power generation in Nigeria to Gencos’ inability or refusal to generate power. The Gencos on their own part had kicked against the position of the TCN that the Gencos were to blame for poor power supply nationwide, they stated that the poor infrastructure of the Discos and TCN had rendered the quantum of electricity generation in Nigeria inconsequential. What is most frustrating about the above statements is that none of them is taking full responsibility for the persistent challenges and seek to squarely address them so stable power can be restored to Nigerian homes and businesses.
What advice are experts giving to Nigerians?
For most businesses, the timing of this national grid collapse couldn’t be worse as the ongoing global diesel crises continue to worsen resulting in an astronomical rise in diesel prices across the nation. The current power outages and fuel price hikes have seemed like a two-pronged assault on the productivity of local businesses across the nation and have significantly inflated the cost of enjoying comfort in residential homes. Although there hasn’t been any indication of a definitive solution to both the recurring grid collapse and global diesel crises, experts and professionals are starting to recommend viable ways of mitigating the effect of these crises. Afolabi Akinrogunde, a renewable energy expert and Investment Manager at All-On, had urged Nigerians to seek renewable off-grid power solutions rather than spend heavily on fueling generators. According to him, “Life-cycle costs of renewable energy solutions are currently between 20 to 30 percent cheaper than fossil fuels,” and he also added that on a comparative basis, the monthly cost savings from adopting renewable energy solutions would ensure that it paid for itself within 18 months on average.
